Beaver Hills Biosphere Day - September 9

WHEREAS the Beaver Hills is a distinct landscape within Leduc County, and one of only two UNESCO biospheres in Alberta;

WHEREAS the Beaver Hills supports a high diversity of vegetation, waterfowl, mammals and birds; and is a critical source of surface and ground water;

WHEREAS the Beaver Hills Initiative promotes conservation of the distinct landscape, biodiversity, socio economic and cultural integration that fosters sustainable development throughout the lived-in and working landscape of the Beaver Hills;

WHEREAS Leduc County has taken action to conserve and enhance the Beaver Hills by supporting the Beaver Hills Initiative and the UNESCO designation of Beaver Hills as a Biosphere; and

WHEREAS public education about the distinctiveness of the Beaver Hills and importance of the Beaver Hills Biosphere designation is essential, and accomplished through celebrating the status of the Beaver Hills Biosphere;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, I, John Whaley, Mayor of Leduc County, proclaims the day of September 9 as Beaver Hills Biosphere Day within Leduc County and urge all citizens to learn about the Beaver Hills and celebrate and enjoy the Beaver Hills Biosphere.
