Types of Statutory Plans

Purpose and process of plan documents:

Land use planning in Alberta is governed by Part 17 of the Municipal Government Act. There are several types of plans that are commonly prepared. Some carry legal weight and are called statutory plans . Others are intended to provide an outline or organize ideas, but are not recognized in law. The four kinds of statutory plans are:

  • Municipal Development Plan
  • Intermunicipal Development Plans
  • Area Structure Plans
  • Area Redevelopment Plans
Other common plans are outline plans, lake management plans, and transportation or parks master plans.

Plans are essentially a vision of a place and a set of policies that function to ensure that the vision is realized. The vision is supported by a body of technical knowledge that is developed along with the plan. Most plans will also include one or more maps which identify significant features in the plan area and illustrate the preferred land use concept.

All statutory plans require public input. Leduc County considers public input to be extremely important to ensure that the vision contained in a statutory plan is one that is shared by the whole community. To that end, public events are included in all planning projects and staff make themselves available for direct contact via telephone, mail and email. Furthermore, all statutory plan projects lead by the County have a dedicated webpage on the County website.
