John Schonewille
![]() John Schonewille found his way west to Leduc County in the early 1980s after travelling through the greater part of Canada. He has had many different careers, including a mechanic, a radio DJ, a newspaper columnist, a Canadian district sales manger and a business owner. An integral community member, John was involved with the Nisku Fire department for over 20 years as a volunteer firefighter and moved through the ranks from rookie to Fire Captain. Now in his third term as division 3 councillor, John feels a strong connection to the residents he serves and to the projects he has been a part of. “Over the years, with the help of other councillors we made Nisku the size it is today. Leduc County has become a stronger, friendlier and healthier place to live and do business.” His vision is for an open and people-focused government, one he hopes will be achieved soon with the support of his fellow councillors. “The municipality and the community have been very good to me, so I’m continually committed to giving back to the people,” he says. Despite having travelled from place to place, John is still passionate about Leduc County and insists that there is nowhere he would rather be: “The thing about Leduc County is… it’s the centre of the world. You have transportation, you have rail, and you have the airport. You have water, recreation, the best land and the largest industrial park in Canada. Where else would you want to be?”
John and his wife have four children and 10 grandchildren, whom they love spending time with.
