Overweight Permits & Load Enforcement
An overweight permit is required anytime you are requesting to move a load that is above the maximum allowable weight on a local district road within Leduc County. It is up to you to determine what amount you are provincially permitted to carry and to advise Leduc County if you need to use any roads within the area including those in the Nisku Industrial Park.

You must have your Government of Alberta Permit in place before you apply for a permit with Leduc County. On the Leduc County permit, you will need to provide your name, company name, all information pertaining to your equipment move including the type of equipment, starting and ending locations, route, date, and time of move.

Permission will NOT be granted until a Leduc County permit number is provided.

The following overweight scenarios require permits:

Tri-Drive Rig
For all Service Rigs that have a tridem drive unit.

Annual Permanently Mounted Equipment
The Annual Permanently Mounted Equipment Permit allows for the operation of heavier than legal axle weights of vehicles with permanently mounted equipment.

Fleet Tri-Drive Exemption
The Fleet Tri-Drive Exemption permit allows for the operation of tridem drive trucks as legal vehicles that may tow any legal trailer and is applicable to all tridem drive trucks in the carrier's fleet. Provisions are subject to the Commercial Vehicle Dimension and Weight Regulation. A copy of this permit must be carried in all units and must be presented upon demand of a Peace Officer.

Annual Tac
The owner/operator of tridem axle group vehicles wanting to carry the maximum legal allowable weight (24,000 kg, and /or 21,000kg, depending on axle spacing), or anyone who wishes to exceed 53,500kg, are restricted to Provincial primary highways. Please see Section 9(1)(f) (A) & (B) AR 315/2002 of the Traffic Safety Act. A copy of this permit must be carried in vehicle at all times and must be presented upon demand by a Peace Officer.

Single Trip Overweight
To supersede the restrictions of the legislation an owner and/or operator may apply for a permit. The Single Trip Overweight Permit will allow you to exceed legal maximum allowable weights on local roads. However, this is not a blanket authorization. This provincial permit requires you to follow specific conditions. One such condition requires the permit holder to obtain prior approval from the local road authority (municipality) who then may grant you authority to carry up to the legal maximum allowable weight on the axle group on their local road.

Most importantly within this portion of the regulation: "no person shall operate a commercial vehicle on a highway when;(ii) on a local road, the gross weight on the axle group exceeds 17,000 kilograms."

If you require permission to haul an overweight load in Leduc County that does not fall under the above-mentioned permits, you may require a special permit. Please call the permit line directly at 780-979-2110 to inquire.
