Leduc County remains under a fire ban until further notice
Despite the recent precipitation in the region, all properties in Leduc County are still under a fire ban.
“We realize much-needed precipitation continues to fall; however, it is too early to determine if this precipitation is sufficient to allow open burning in Leduc County,” said Leduc County Fire Chief Darrell Fleming. “Recent events in our province have shown how unpredictable fire can be, and we will not risk the safety of people and properties in Leduc County.”
“Until we have an opportunity to better assess and minimize the risk the fire ban will remain in effect today and for the duration of the Victoria Day long weekend,” continued Chief Fleming. "We will reassess and provide an update next week.”
Leduc County’s fire ban, originally put into effect on April 1 at 10 a.m., encompasses all rural and urban properties within the county including:
- hamlets of Buford, Kavanagh, Looma, New Sarepta, Rolly View, and Sunnybrook
- Nisku Industrial Business Park
- all campgrounds, day use areas and parks within Leduc County including, but not limited to, Jubilee Park on Wizard Lake, Centennial Park at Joseph Lake, Sunnybrook Creek Park, Genesee Heritage Park and the Nisku Recreation Centre grounds
The fire ban prohibits open fires, campfires, fires used for cooking or warmth, burning barrels and the discharge of fireworks. The fire ban does not apply to fires contained in cooking and heating appliances that are fueled by liquid fuel.
Any individual responsible for setting a fire prohibited under the ban will be responsible for the costs of extinguishing the fire pursuant to Leduc County bylaws and may be charged under the Forest and Prairie Protection Act.
Note: While current fire advisories and ban information in Alberta can usually be found on Alberta Fire Bans, they are experiencing some technical difficulties with their website. Leduc County is under a fire ban, even though the Alberta Fire Bans website does not currently list it.
