Northwest Saunders Lake Area Structure Plan
In June of 2016, Leduc County and the City of Leduc began jointly planning for a new business area within the northwest Saunders Lake area.
This project concluded this August when Leduc County council provided third and final reading to bylaws to amend the joint City of Leduc/Leduc County Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP) and the county’s Municipal Development Plan (MDP). The amendments of these documents allow for the development of a high-quality business park with the requirement to recognize environmental protection and preservation.
As a result of council approving the bylaws, the existing Saunders Lake Area Structure Plan (ASP) was rescinded and a new Northwest Saunders Lake ASP was adopted. This ASP encompasses roughly 601 hectares of land, and provides for a mixture of businesses uses, public open space, recreation and environmental protection.
The Northwest Saunders Lake ASP reflects the changing face of the area, due to factors such as the planned construction of the Nisku Spine Road, new transmission line development and growth in the vicinity of the Edmonton International Airport. This growth will bring further economic prosperity to the region and is expected to provide up to 11,000 additional jobs locally.
Construction of the first phase of the business park is expected to commence in 2018, once more detailed planning work is undertaken.
