Animal control services

Leduc County is committed to keeping our residents and animals safe. Our Animal Control bylaw details regulations for dog control and outlines kennel operation regulations in Leduc County.

Report a dog control concern

If a dog has bitten you or your pet, seek medical or veterinary attention immediately, and report it to Leduc County using the above form.

Finding a lost animal

We recommend that your animal has some form of identification, such as a collar, tag, tattoo or microchip. Animals with identification are more likely to be reunited with their families if they go missing.

What do to if you have lost an animal
  1. Look around your property/subdivision and ask neighbours if they have seen your animal. Let others know you've lost your animal and provide details on what your animal looks like and who they should contact if they find it.
  2. If you've lost your dog, call 780-955-5005 to see if your dog has been found by our animal control officer.
  3. Contact area veterinary clinics to see if your animal has been admitted.
  4. Check and post online. Found animals are often listed on websites like Kijiji and Facebook groups like Edmonton and Area Lost Pets. You can also post on these websites/groups that your animal is lost, so individuals know who to contact if it is found.

Dog control

According to the Animal Control bylaw, you must:

  • ensure your dog is always on a leash and not running at large
  • immediately remove dog waste from any property other than your own
  • keep your dog from becoming a public nuisance by preventing barking and chasing livestock or other animals, bicycles and people
  • ensure your dog doesn't cause damage to property or other animals
  • ensure your dog doesn't scatter garbage from waste bins

If you fail to follow these regulations, you may receive a fine.

Cat control

We don't have a cat control bylaw in Leduc County.

Stray cats

Stray cats are homeless cats that may have once been indoor cats and are accustomed to people.

If you find an injured, stray cat, contact the Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) at 780-491-3522. Injuries can include including limping, open wounds or being underweight. Stray cats that appear to be healthy can be left where they are.

Feral cats

Feral cats are homeless cats that have had minimal contact with people. If you find a feral cat in Leduc County, visit Edmonton Humane Society's Trap Neuter and Return program to learn more about how you can help control overpopulation in feral cat colonies.

To participate, you will need to trap a healthy feral cat in a humane trap and transport it to the Edmonton Human Society. The cat will be neutered or spayed, and will receive vaccinations and a microchip. After that, you can pick up the cat and return it to the original location.

Livestock control

Contact the brand registrar at Livestock Identification Services at 1-866-509-2088 if you see any livestock outside of their compounds, including on public roadways.

Animals in distress

For animals in distress, contact the Alberta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (SPCA) at 1-800-455-9003.
