Leduc County issues free fire permits to rural residents* conducting open burns between March 1 and Oct. 31.
*Business representatives who wish to have an open fire in the Nisku Business Park can apply for a fire permit online. Please follow the instructions of your burn permit, as listed in Bylaw No. 13-24. Burn permits are required year-round in the Nisku Business Park. Learn more.
Beginning March 1, 2025, rural residents will be able to apply for open burn permits using a new online system, located at lcfs.burnpermits.com.

When do I need a fire permit? |
Leduc County issues free fire permits to rural residents conducting open burns between March 1 and Oct. 31. Please note rural residents in subdivisions cannot have open burns. |
What is an open burn? |
Open burning is any fire that is not contained within a firepit, campfire, burn barrel, fireplace, barbecue or smudge fire. |
How long is a fire permit valid for? |
Fire permits for open burning [rural] are valid for a period of two weeks. |
How can I receive a fire permit online? |

What can I burn? |
A fire permit allows holders to burn yard waste (weeds, leaves, tree prunings, brush, fallen trees) and wood or wood products that do not contain preservatives (untreated pallets, wood crates, etc.). |
Who is eligible to apply online for a fire permit? |
Only individuals - over the age of 18 - who reside in rural Leduc County (not in a rural subdivision) and businesses in the Nisku Business Park can apply online for a fire permit. |
What happens after I receive my online fire permit? |
Permit holders must abide by the terms and conditions noted on their permit and all additional conditions as outlined in Burning Bylaw 13-22. Requirements include monitoring weather conditions, calling prior to each burn to ensure no fire restrictions or bans are in effect and ensuring the burn is controlled at all times. |
Do I need to apply for a fire permit before March 1 or after Oct. 31? |
No. You do not need a fire permit for open burns between Nov. 1 and Feb. 28 (unless you are in the Nisku Business Park); however, we encourage you to notify Leduc County Fire Services in advance of the burn. Please note rural residents in subdivisions cannot have open burns. |
