Properly secured cargo minimizes the risk to other motorists and prevents cargo from littering the ditches of area roadways.

Drivers are responsible for making sure the cargo they are carrying is secured to their vehicle. Failing to do so can result in a fine. Further, it means tax dollars must be spent to clean up the litter, which costs us all money.

Cargo that is not properly secured to a vehicle during transport jeopardizes the lives and safety of other motorists. It takes just a few minutes to ensure the cargo you are transporting is properly secured, which protects the public and prevents fines.

Failure to secure cargo when traveling on a local County roadway (excluding provincial roadways) could result in a $500 fine under Leduc County's Traffic Bylaw. Commercial vehicle operators could also face an $810 fine under the Traffic Safety Act for failing to secure their cargo.

Tips for securing your cargo

• Use tie-down straps to properly secure objects.
• Place light objects lower in the container instead of on the top, to prevent them from exiting the container.
• Tie large items, like mattresses and construction equipment, directly to your vehicle with appropriate tie-down straps.
• Put loose items, like garbage and yard waste, in a covered container so they are easier to secure.
• Place a tarp over loose items or those that billow in the wind to ensure they don’t fall from your vehicle.
