Leduc County council adopts new Municipal Development Plan

Leduc County council adopted a new Municipal Development Plan (MDP) at its regular council meeting on Tuesday afternoon.

The new MDP, which replaces the existing plan adopted in 1999, will guide growth and development in the county for the next 30 years. The county consulted with residents and other stakeholders, who shared their thoughts and ideas for Leduc County’s future. This feedback was incorporated into the new plan.

Our new Municipal Development Plan sets out a vision and direction for growth for many years to come. Managing development in a sustainable way will allow us to conserve prime agricultural land, and contribute to a higher quality of life for our current and future residents, businesses and visitors.

The MDP is the county's primary planning document, which shows how a community is expected to grow and develop over time. All other statutory and non-statutory plans developed by the county must align with the plan.

The MDP identifies eight goals: protect agricultural land and support diversity in agriculture; promote economic development; develop complete communities; promote responsible use of natural resources as an economic asset; protect and enhance the natural environment; identify and act on opportunities for recreation and tourism; develop efficient and cost effective transportation utility service infrastructure and collaborate and seize opportunities to create efficiencies. The policies and objectives of the MDP support these goals.
