Leduc County welcomes federal coal transition task force recommendations

A series of recommendations provided by a Government of Canada task force highlights the importance of providing support and financial resources to communities, like Leduc County, who will be directly impacted by the phase out of coal-fired electricity.

We are pleased to see that the recommendations from the task force reflect the concerns of affected communities across Canada, including Leduc County. The federal government must keep the families in our communities who depend on the coal industry to make a living at the forefront of the decision-making process, and ensure support for municipalities impacted by the transition.

Leduc County has been working diligently with the federal and provincial governments to secure funding to help diminish the impacts of the transition away from coal-fired electricity, which will cost the county approximately $20 million annually.

Earlier this week the Government of Canada’s Just Transition for Canadian Coal Power Workers and Communities task force delivered its report with recommendations on making the transition away from coal-fired electricity fair for Canadian communities and coal workers.

The recommendations from the report encourage the Government of Canada to take action and invest in affected communities through local infrastructure projects, transition funding programs and funding application support.
