Leduc County peace officers welcomed the spring season with a number of proactive enforcement operations over the Victoria Day long weekend.
Over the four-day period from May 17 to May 20, peace officers travelled 2,941 kilometres and issued a total of 21 charges and 16 warnings for speeding, intersection safety, and gaming and liquor violations.
This past weekend our peace officers charged 19 drivers with speeding. Although we are disappointed that motorists continue to drive above posted speed limits, we are pleased with the significant decline in the number of charges laid compared to last year. We will continue to patrol roadways in the area to make sure motorists can get where they are going safely.
Clarence Nelson, director of Enforcement Services
Three excessive speeders were charged, including a vehicle travelling 128 kilometres per hour in a 90-kilometre-per-hour zone on Airport Road near Nisku. Two additional motorists were charged with speeding at more than 30 kilometres per hour over the posted speed limit.
In addition to traffic operations, peace officers assisted Leduc County Fire Services at the scene of three separate incidents.
In 2018, peace officers issued 55 charges and 31 warnings over the same four-day period.
