A frost boil, also known as a frost heave, happens when moisture reaches the base of a road. When temperatures drop below freezing, this moisture freezes and expands, which results in soil pushing up to the road’s surface.
Frost boils look like a mound of black dirt and they may appear overnight, and can last for several weeks. To repair them, graders have to continually work the area, and in some cases, it is necessary to dig out the affected area to complete the repair.
