Edmonton annexation order

Edmonton annexation order

The City of Edmonton successfully annexed 8,260 hectares (20,402 acres) of land from Leduc County, effective Jan. 1, 2019.

The Government of Alberta approved the City of Edmonton's annexation application through Order in Council 359/2018, signed on Nov. 27, 2018.

Proposed amendment to annexation order

The order provided property tax protection for part of the “Discovery Lands” located directly north of Edmonton International Airport.

Earlier this year, the Minister of Municipal Affairs issued Ministerial Order No. MSD:010/22, which referred a question to the Land and Property Rights Tribunal of whether Order 359/2018 was in error by including a specific parcel of land in the property tax protection provisions of the Order.

The Land and Property Rights Tribunal has scheduled a preliminary public hearing regarding this matter to commence at 9 a.m. on June 27, 2022. The Land and Property Rights Tribunal has requested that Leduc County post the following documents online for review:

  1. Order in Council O.C. 359/18
  2. Ministerial Order MSD:01/22
  3. Nov. 22, 2021 correspondence from the City of Edmonton to the Minister of Municipal Affairs
  4. Municipal Government Board Order 050/18
  5. Returned City of Edmonton letter
