Revisit winter burn sites

Wildfire season is coming up quickly, and Leduc County Fire Services is urging everyone who has conducted winter burns to check on all burn sites to ensure every fire is completely out.

Due to dry fall conditions and a lack of in-ground moisture, there is potential for fires lit during the winter to continue to burn under the snow and re-emerge as wildfires this spring.

To prevent winter fires from re-emerging this spring, please revisit any winter burns you may have conducted, such as brush piles or windrow burning projects, to make sure the fires are extinguished. To ensure this is done properly, take the following steps:

  1. Spread out all remaining material.
  2. Soak the area and check that heat and smoke are no longer being produced.

Burn permits

Beginning on Friday, March 1, burn permits will be required for all individuals conducting open burns. Fire permits* for open burning are available at no charge from a designated fire guardian in Leduc County.

*Individuals conducting open and/or contained burning must follow all fire restrictions and bans issued for Leduc County, which are posted to leduc-county.com and albertafirebans.ca.

We issue fire advisories, restrictions and bans to protect life and property when there is a high risk of fire based on a variety of factors, including weather conditions, feedback from residents and fire conditions throughout the region and province.
